A SUMMER CAMP BEYOND THEIR WILDEST DREAMS
All kids love to go to summer camp, and ALEH’s children are no exception. But their summer camp is unique and particularly wonderful. ALEH Jerusalem’s volunteers work all year in order to be able to go on a unique summer field trip with their best friends, 30 children and adults with severe intellectual developmental disabilities, and to shower them with love.
The residents and volunteers spent two days chock full of exciting activities – a trip to the Beit Guvrin caves, a circus workshop and happening, a fire show, a yummy chocolate workshop and a party. They slept over night at Kibbutz Netiv HaLamed Heh, a special experience for them. Our National Service girls, volunteers and ALEH Jerusalem’s staff worked intensively in order to make the camp a reality.
For residents with disabilities, the camp is a great opportunity for a break in routine and a change from their regular surroundings, and to get to know the country. For our volunteers, this is an additional opportunity to spend quality time with the residents, giving them an opportunity to be part of society, just like everyone else.
Shlomit Grayevsky, CEO of ALEH in Jerusalem: “During the camp, we were all filled with positive energy and renewed strength for the coming year. Residents’ families came to visit during the camp and the joy on their faces moved us as well. People with disabilities also have the right to go on holiday, just like their peers. It enables them to go further, to demand more of themselves.”
A HUGE thank-you goes out to all of the donors who enabled this camp to happen, helping ALEH’s children to feel worthy and providing them with such a wonderful, special experience.
