Mark Freiman with Major General (Res) Doron Almog
As the recently appointed President of the Canadian Jewish Congress, Mark Freiman’s trip to Israel was packed with appointments, obligations and meetings, including being a personal visit with President of Israel Shimon Peres. Yet despite all of his commitments, the invitation he received from his friend’s daughter intrigued him enough to make the time in his busy schedule for a special visit.
Yael Shidlovsky – a psychologist and senior staff member at ALEH Moriah – and daughter of Freiman’s close friend, promised him that a visit to the ALEH Moriah Center in Gederah would be something he would remember forever.
She was right.
ALEH Moriah is a home for severely disabled youngsters and young adults. Based on the belief that every person deserves the opportunity to realize his or her potential, Moriah uses every available means to provide its children with a high quality life filled with joy, security and love.
Mark was greeted by Major General (Res) Doron Almog, father of a former resident of Moriah and current Chairman of ALEH Negev-Nahalat Eran; ALEH Director General Yehuda Marmorstein; and Moriah Director Naama Sudkevitz. As he and Mr. Shidlovsky toured the facility and saw the love and warmth, the programs, projects and activity of these very special people, Mark expressed his emotions.
“Today I speak about the choices of those who are able to choose compared to those who cannot choose. My whole life I grew up amongst wise men. I heard a great deal and I spoke a great deal. Today I prefer not to talk but to listen, and to ask others to do the same. This place has given me a new perspective on life and ideas for the future. This is the beginning of a new friendship and very possibly partnership. This place that you have established for the weakest in society is also meant for those who think they are strong!
“From today on I hope to become a part of the ALEH club – the club of the most special people on earth.”
