Never say Never – ALEH Residents join the 2014 Jerusalem Marathon!
Mar 23, 2014
This past Friday, March 21, 2014, 20 ALEH children ran in the International Jerusalem Marathon, together with family members, staff and hundreds of volunteers from across the spectrum of Israeli society. Some of the children participated in the race in their wheelchairs, but a special group made their way along the track on their own two feet, using specialized rehabilitative equipment and accompanied by professional staff.
Team ALEH was honored by the presence of Major General (Res) Doron Almog, Chairman of ALEH Negev-Nahalat Eran Rehabilitative Village, and Esti Ginsberg, popular Israeli supermodel. Mayor of Jerusalem Nir Barkat, a friend of ALEH’s children for many years, came over to offer his best wishes to the children of ALEH both before the race began and of course following their successful completion of the track. Dozens of other friends and board members of ALEH joined TEAM ALEH on the various tracks – all wearing ALEH’s distinctive T-shirt to show solidarity and raise awareness.
The children of ALEH are not usually active participants in community sports events due to their severe physical and cognitive disabilities. This time, we decided to do whatever it takes to break this myth called “impossible” and enable our children to be part of the Jerusalem Marathon, just like their regular peers. The children underwent intensive training and exercise to prepare them for their active participation, even if just with a few steps. The Marathon also expresses our belief that physical activity enhances our children’s general health and wellbeing as well as their spirit.
ALEH is grateful to its amazing volunteers, who made this amazing event a reality. Most important we are proud of our very special children, who proved once again that they can take their rightful place as full-fledged members of society!
