Cool Pool Fun – Making a Splash with ALEH Kids
April 30, 2008
Everyone loves the pool, and ALEH’s children are no exception. There’s something about the water that instills a sense of coolness and tranquility, and it’s great fun to splash around! But for ALEH’s disabled children there is an added bonus – water gives a sense of weightlessness, making movement and exercise much more comfortable. The buoyancy of the water puts less stress on joints; at the same time, water also acts as a resistance to build muscle strength. And in addition to the therapeutic physical benefits of hydrotherapy, it also has an emotional component: it increases a child’s sense of satisfaction and self-confidence.
That is why all of ALEH’s branches make it a priority to take the children on regular outings to the pool, so they can enjoy the benefits of hydrotherapy as often as needed. ALEH Negev’s pool is nearing completion, and plans are underway for a pool at the ALEH Jerusalem Center to serve ALEH’s kids as well as special-needs people from the community at large. (Dedication and naming opportunities still available – please contact email@example.com)
In the meantime, taking the children to the pool can be quite difficult. Schedules must be adjusted based on pool availability, and travel costs and the logistical complications inherent in travel are prohibitive. But the smiles on the children’s faces, and the sense of absolute joy and freedom they express while in the water makes it all worthwhile.
May the program continue to go swimmingly!
