What do Shlomo Carlebach, The Beatles, Ehud Banai and Rabbi Benny Lau have in common?  They were all featured during the recent ALEH Jerusalem Committee’s Gala Event, celebrating 18 (Chai) years of devoted efforts to benefit ALEH.
The event, held at the Jerusalem Theater on February 10, proved to be a smashing success.  The diverse and eclectic mix of entertainers included Chizki Sopher; singing Carlebach melodies and sounding uncannily like the original, he had the audience clapping along and dancing to the beat.  He was followed by the unique Israeli sound of Ehud Banai, who enthralled the crowd with songs of nostalgia and longing.  The two performers teamed up later to offer a double treat of folksy Carlebach tunes.  And when a group of Israeli singers performed “The Magical Mystery Tour” – A Tribute to the Beatles, young and old alike joined in to sing, as the packed auditorium filled with powerful sound.
Mixed in with the gaiety were some moving words from Yehuda Marmorstein, Executive Director of ALEH, who thanked participants for their support, reiterating all the important work that ALEH has achieved with their assistance.  Rav Benny Lau, Rabbi of the Bet Morasha Institute and of the Ramban Synagogue & Community in Jerusalem, spoke of the weekly Torah portion regarding lighting the menorah with the most refined olive oil.  ALEH Negev is like that purest oil, using the very best of everything to carry out its holy work.   Every one of ALEH’s children is a perfect neshama (soul), contrary to conventional wisdom, which looks at their disabilities as making them less than complete.  It is our duty, said Rav Benny, not only to raise them up, but to raise ourselves to their level.
The evening continued to combine seriousness of purpose with rollicking good humor.  Jackie Levy, as the evening’s Master of Ceremonies, had everyone in stitches with his hilarious, yet poignant anecdotes.
The ALEH Jerusalem Committee, responsible for planning and organizing the event, has been volunteering for 18 years to help make a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable children in Israel.  Special thanks to Mrs. Rivka Chervin-Weinberger and her dedicated ladies committee for such a wonderful event!  Their hard work certainly paid off, as guests were overheard already anticipating next year’s event……
