After a short two years at ALEH Negev-Nahalat Eran, we recently took leave of Max Carbo, a truly amazing volunteer who joined the Overseas Volunteer Program in 2018.

Born in the United States 57 years ago, as a child Max moved to Puerto Rico with his parents, eventually meeting and marrying Silvia. The couple continued their lives together in Puerto Rico before relocating to Texas with their three children, always safeguarding their dream of travelling to Israel to participate in a volunteer mission. Silvia’s premature passing forced Max to restructure, and he decided that, despite the pain, the time was right for him to realize their dream. Max submitted his candidacy to the Overseas Volunteer Program at ALEH Negev-Nahalat Eran.

Upon acceptance to the program and arrival in Israel, Max began working with older residents in the Keshet House. A magical chemistry took hold immediately. Max became a warm and loving father figure to residents and a dedicated, supportive member of the staff team. As time went by, Max took on more and more responsibilities, including accompanying groups of residents on daily walks throughout the village, a vital part of their routine that enables them to reap the benefits of fresh air and sunshine.

Max fit right in with the rest of the overseas volunteers, naturally and seamlessly becoming a kind of father figure and source of advice and guidance to the mostly younger group.

A talented artist, an optimistic personality with a listening ear and an endless giver, Max’s light shined bright upon everyone at the village, residents, volunteers and staff. Even in his absence, Max will continue to be part of the village family.

Unfortunately, an unexpected family medical issue forced Max to cut short his stay at ALEH Negev-Nahalat Eran. We wish Max and all of his family the best of health, and hope to welcome Max back to the village sometime in the future.

Thank you, Max, for two very enjoyable and productive years.  We love you!
