A Double Celebration for ALEH’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah Bunch
MAZAL TOV! In April, 20 ALEH residents celebrated their rites of passage into adulthood with family, friends and ALEH staff and volunteers at the Chabad Center in the Ramat Shlomo neighborhood of Jerusalem. Throughout the festive prayer service, the ALEH staff and volunteers engaged with the residents who were marking their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, helping them put on tefillin for the first time and kiss the Torah scroll. The ALEH residents particularly enjoyed when the crowd showered them with candy and chocolates.
The next day, the ALEH residents returned to the Chabad Center to participate in a Siddur party dress rehearsal. They joined a group of 20 local first graders who were practicing their prayers in preparation for a big event several weeks later. With the help of our dedicated volunteers, the ALEH residents joined in, singing and praying with their new friends. They delighted in performing their first mitzvot as adults.
“We see the Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations and the Siddur party rehearsal as important milestones for both the families and the students themselves,” said Rachel Fishheimer, Principal of ALEH’s Special Education School in Jerusalem. “It’s important to us that every ALEH student and resident enjoys these experiences and takes and active role in the celebration. These are important moments of growth for all involved, and we want them to be memorable and impactful. We are so thankful to Chabad for their kind hospitality and the opportunity to celebrate with them in such meaningful ways.”
